Audrey: a COVID-19 sonnet
Was I as full of joy in youth, as she?
Watch her ‘round the garden, she laughs, she plays.
Oh, to be like her and from burdens, flee;
Simple, so to savour these happy days.
A horse! She trots from tree to tree, a neigh
And then, she stops to watch a bird, a bug
Now you, Mummy, my dear – enjoy the day!
Your turn, surprise! Come see, I found a slug!
No care, the sun upon her face, she glows;
Wonder, pure joy, transcends these times, so grim
Cheerful, untouched by life’s, dark earthly woes.
No sickness can silence her joyful hymn.
May we all with grace, till trials cease,
Trust like a child in love and perfect peace.
